ABOUT

Narrated by senior TIME Magazine writer Jeffrey Kluger and accompanied by actual mission audio provided by NASA, the “Landing on the Moon” app experience allowed users to watch the historic moon landing event unfold in real-time from multiple perspectives. The lunar module, flight path, and the lunar surface itself were painstakingly re-created by John Knoll of Industrial Light and Magic. Users can place the lunar surface in their world and watch as the lunar module descends to the surface. Upon landing, the user is transitioned into a 360º cinematic sequence of Armstrong taking Man’s first steps on the lunar surface. Finally, for the first time ever, users are free to ‘walk’ on the moon’s surface and explore in virtual reality what it would have been like to walk on the moon.

The “Landing on the Moon” experience is the world’s most scientifically and historically accurate 3D re-creation of the Apollo 11 moon landing.

In addition to the app, a Web AR experience hosted on TIME.com allowed users to place Neil Armstrong’s spacesuit, which was provided by the Smithsonian, alongside the American flag as it was planted on the moon in augmented reality. The experience experience featured link outs to download the TIME Immersive app and continue to discover Apollo 11 in a whole new way.
